Lesson 1: The Communication Process Nature of Communication Communication is derived from the word (common) which means belonging to many and (communico) which means to confer with others.

Communication: a process by which people send messages. exchange of ideas and thoughts in verbal and non-verbal 

Elements of Communication 1. Sender or encoder      decides on the message to be sent       sender's job is to conceptualize

Elements of Communication 2. Medium       immediate from which the message takes. ex: letter, email or face to face

Elements of Communication 3. Channel         responsible for the delivery of the chosen message ex: post office, television, radio, internet or other forms of media 

Elements of Communication 4. Receiver      or decoder is responsible for extracting or decoding the meaning from the sender      it is also responsible to provide a feedback and interpret the message 

Elements of Communication 6. Context      the context of any communication act is the surrounding it.      this includes the place, time, event and attitude of the sender and receiver 

Elements of Communication 7. Noise (also called interference)       inhibits the conveyance of the message          message being accurately received, conveyed, interpreted and responded to.

Kinesics derived from the Greek word "kinesis" meaning motion that pertains to the study of motion.

2. Paralanguage

Other term for paralinguistics that helps us to understand the meaning of the message.

a. Speaking voice: pitch, volume, duration and intonation  b. Vocalization: crying, giggling, moaning, gargling, yawning, singing and groaning  c. Vocal pauses: ughhh, ummmm, shhhh and etc.  

3. Time / Chronemics  The study of how people use time in communication.

 Length of time, appropriate use of time, and differences in time .

Our use of time reflects: Power/status Cultural norms Expectations Interpersonal priorities

4. Proxemics • Study of how we use space and distance • Includes seating arrangements, queuing and territoriality • Ideas of ‘personal space’, ‘invasion of personal space’ and ‘comfort zones ’

 Use of objects as ‘markers’ to indicate ownership of space

5. Physical Appearance or Object Language  Clothing, hairstyle, makeup, body adornment, jewelry, tattoos, piercings, glasses, facial hair, accessories such as bags •.

 Includes the things with which we cover or adorn our bodies, but also the shape and size of our bodies It is the body’s capacity to communicate aspects of an individual’s identity which makes us so aware of our physical appearance
