Aircraft Reference Guide

The Aircraft The Model The aircraft modelled is a 1947 Piper PA-11 Cub Special. This aircraft is equipped with a Continental A-65-8F (65 hp) engine. Features of the model are:

Complete exterior model designed in Blender, with animated parts (Control surfaces with detailed transmission, tail wheel steering, suspension, Propeller, Doors Windows, etc.) Wheels and floats versions available in the same package.

Three paint schemes and blank textures are Included in the package.

Custom sounds.

Animated 3D Pilots designed in Blender.

Fully functional 3D cockpit, with manipulators-based technology.

X-Plane Versions Compatibility This package was developed and tested in X-Plane 9.70. I can't guarantee compatibility in older X-plane versions than this.

About Alcalá Simulación Alcalá Simulación is my own and single person project, originally intended to development of freeware addons (sceneries and aircrafts) for Microsoft Flight Simulator. In 2008, I bought a X-Plane V9, and, from this year, all developments are oriented to X-Plane. Is important, for me, you know the following: I'm only a flight simulator enthusiast. I haven't contact with real flight word, and I never see, or flight this aircraft in real life. Although I tried to make it as real as possible based on photographs, technical data and information founded in the WWW. Unfortunately, I can't ensure or guarantee the exact similitude between this simulated model and the real aircraft. My apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. This aircraft have houndreds of hours of hard work. Despite this I have decided to publish it for free, because not everyone can now spend money on aircraft for X-Plane, thanks to this “crisis” that seems endless ... Although this plane is for X-Plane 9, there is a version for X-Plane 10 This new plane has been made possible by the donations received by ELA Gyroplane publication, which allowed me to buy a license for XPlane 10. If you really enjoy this aircraft, consider making a donation. If you want to make a Donation please visit www.alcala-sim.blogspot.com Have good flights. Adrián Fernández Gómez (awall86) alcalá[email protected] NOTE: I apologize for my bad English. It is very difficult for me to write this document in English.

X-Plane Settings Recommended X-Plane Settings Rendering Options In order to properly enjoy this plane you should make a series of adjustments in rendering options. To do this go to Settings and select Rendering Options. Make sure the checkbox labeled "draw per pixel lightning" is checked.

Settings for Texture resolution If your video card supports it, is highly recommended that you select the option "extreme res! the texture resolution option. Depending on the quality of your video card you can choose a higher or lower resolution textures. At higherresolution textures, the better the quality of the textures that you can see, and the plane and its details will be more clearly.

Operation & Warnings In order to make the complete engine and systems startup process, you should adjust the way the plane is loaded into the simulator. To do this, go to Settings and choose the option "Operation & Warnings" Make sure the checkbox labeled "Start each flight with engines running" is unchecked. It is also recommended that the checkbox labeled "Start each flight on ramp" is checked.

Engine tachometer Indicates engine rotation speed in RPM. The Cub tachometer is a singular instrument, because the needle moves in anti clockwise direction. Engine Idle: 500-550 RPM Cruise: 2000-2100 RPM Max for takeoff: 2350 RPM

Airspeed indicator Indicates aircraft airspeed in miles per hour. Cruise speed: 75 MPH Stall speed: 35 MPH

Magnetic compass Indicates magnetic course in degrees.

Slip indicator The slip indicator shows slip or skid. When the ball in the indicator moves out of its center position, the aircraft is slipping or skidding. Altimeter (non-sensitive) Indicates aircraft barometric altitude in feet. This instrument is extremelly simple. The knob, instead of moving the needles, rotates the bottom of the instrument. To adjust the instrument, turn the dial until the needle matches, in the scale, the altitude of the airport you are operating,

Combined Oil Temperature/Oil Pressure indicator Upper seccion: Indicates engine oil temperature in Fareheit degrees. Normal opertion temp: 100 - 110 ºF Lower section: Indicates engine oil pressure in PSI. Normal operation 50-60 PSI. Red Line: 100 PSI

ICOM AC-15s handheld VHF radio The PA-11 does not have a battery or electrical system, therefore does not have a VHF radio equipment installed in the aircraft. A Icom AC-15s is provided for comunication purposes. They have 4 interactive areas to change frequencies: Select a lower frequency Select a lower frequency (fine tunning) Select a upper frequency (fine tunning) Select a upper frequency

Engine startup Procedure To start the engine follow this steps: 1 – Verify magnetos switch position. Must be in off. 2 – Verify fuel cuttof switch position. Must be in off. 3 – Verify throttle handle. Must be in cuttoff position. 3 – Open the cabin door and put the hand in propeller blade. Move the hand up and then down to turn the propeller, 4 or 5 cycles. This procedure lubricates engine cylinders. 4 – Verify brakes applied (V key in X-plane) 5 – Verify fuel quantity. 6 – Turn on magnetos switch and fuel cuttof switch, to on position. 7 – Verify propeller area. Must be cleared. 8 - Put the hand in propeller blade again. Move the propeller blade down to start the engine, Repeat this step, until the engine runs. 9 – set throttle to 700 RPM and leave the engine to raise normal operation temperature before taxi. Note: To start the engine you mus be in 3D cockpit view.

Special Features 3D Pilot and Copilot figures Pilot and copilot figures have the head animated. You can see pilot and copilot “checking” flight instruments and environment in external view. Pilot and copilot are visible only if you are in external view. Also the co-pilot is only visible if the actual payload of the plane is over 245 lbs, that is, if your “passenger” is aboard.

Aircraft with a Payload less than 245 Lbs

Aircraft with a Payload over 245 Lbs

Floats version A aditional version equiped with floats is provided in this package. The cockpit is the same as the standard version. All procedures explained in this manual are aplicable to this version too.

Water rudder lever Version equiped with floats, have a aditional lever located in the floor of cabin, on the left side of the pilot seat. This lever is used to raise or lower the water rudder located in the right float.

Water rudder operation Lower the rudder to maneouver the plane in the water. Be sure to raise the rudder before attempting a takeoff.

Wave height settings in X-plane Default wave height value in X-plane is too high for this plane. The optimal setting of this parameter is between 00.1 and 00.3 ft, to prevent uncontrolled movement of the aircraft

This acronym is translated as follows: C for Controls free and correct I for Instruments correct G for Gas correct (Fuel Quantity) A for Attitude correct (trim neutral for takeoff) R for Runup (check magnetos) S for Safety check.
